5 out of 5 stars Excellent, and nothing quite like it   May 26, 2004

This book is smart. It is practical and helpful. Besides offering many great ideas on writing coherant paragraphs, it becomes an excellent aid to brainstorming. My only gripe is that there is no bibliography for reference and further study, and no references to recommended paragraphs by other writers. Still, I know of no book quite like this. I'm glad I bought it.

5 out of 5 stars An interesting book for beginners through experienced writers   November 27, 2009

Victor C. Pellegrino has written four extremely interesting books on writing, each of which is usable by high school students through experienced writers.

For aspiring writers, "A Writer's Guide to Powerful Paragraphs" provides a framework for properly learning what a paragraph is - and then proceeds to describe thirty ways to write paragraphs. Interestingly, Pellegrino's approach is equally effective for the experienced writer who simply needs a bit of a boost or reminder of what paragraphs are all about or some inspiration.

Pellegrino provides a general introduction to paragraph construction (one thought per paragraph!) and then thirty short chapters on different ways to write paragraphs. In Pellegrino's own words, he provides "a short, simple and direct explanation of one type of paragraph, followed by an example, an analysis of the example, and practical suggestions for writing that type of paragraph". His own writing is extremely clear and, as odd as it may sound, refreshing. He is not t all condescending and brings a refreshing enthusiasm to his description. The book is fun reading.

"A Writer's Guide to Powerful Paragraphs" is useful because it gives you a short and handy reference to all the ways in which you might approach a paragraph. I cannot speak for other writers, but I know I sometimes lock myself into a single viewpoint and something like this book will snap me out of it.

Pellegrino is definitely gifted. His four little books on writing belong on or near every writer's desk. I'm glad I discovered his work.

Jerry
