I used this with my second grader last year. He went from hating the thought of writing (and complaining/crying every time any writing on his own was mentioned) to competently summarizing and writing what is required in this book without complaint. It was a huge step for us. I am going to use Level 3 this coming year for him, and also start my 5 1/2 year old on Level 1.
I also agree with the first commenter...ALL you need it the WORKBOOK! We did all our work on paper and didn't use the student sheets in the back.

This provides everything I have come to expect from this series of tools by Susan Wise Bauer. Level 1 was excellent and Level 2 is living up to my expectations. As a mom teaching multiple levels and a mom trying to stick to a classical framework - this is great for us!

We have been doing this program for a year now. We started out doing level one. My son has responded to this better than i had hoped for. The subject i was most concerned about him with was his writing. He talks a lot, and with quite an extensive vocabulary; however, when it came time to write, he would write 4 word sentances. Now he is narrating and copying lines and lines of sentances. It is amazing how she works you through the process of writing on a level that children understand.
My younger son has had problems with reading and writing. He could not write a sentance. I had not realized how hard it was for him to try to write while coming up with the idea and thought. As he has verbally answered the questions that are part of the exercises he has learned to organize his thoughts. i have come to understand how complex his thoughts are. I have seen him progress with the practice, and know he will only learn more with this program.

I have a 4th grader who despises writing - this "gentle" approach fits our needs quite well. It is enjoyable for both of us and takes little time each day... very usable. The workbook pages are for younger children as the spacing is like primer paper. We use regular notebook paper for our work. I wish I had discovered this sooner!
